Cravont Charleston, a Tracksmith professional athlete who ranks No. 4 under all conditions in the U.S. and equal to the No. 7 in the world this year in the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided 9.87 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing July 6-9 at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Charleston, 25, is also the No. 4 American wind-legal competitor and equal to No. 7 globally this season at 9.90. He is also a top 25 wind-legal performer in U.S. history. Charleston reflects on his five-day trip in June to Finland and victories in the 100 in wind-legal efforts of 9.90 and 9.95. He also revisits winning the 100 in a wind-aided 9.87 performance April 15 at the 63rd Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., in addition to his runner-up finish May 27 in a wind-legal 9.91 mark at the USATF Grand Prix at UCLA's Drake Stadium. Charleston explains how proud he is of the consistency in his performances this season, along with examining his improvement from last year, when he eclipsed the 10-second barrier for the first time by running 9.98 in Switzerland. He shares how meaningful it has been to have Allen Johnson as a coach, both at North Carolina State, and now as a post-collegiate competitor, with Johnson taking over the program at North Carolina A&T last year. Charleston, a graduate of Mallard Creek High in North Carolina, also speaks about how significant it has been to be closer to his family and church, and how that support system has contributed to his success on the track this year. He also analyzes how instrumental his faith has been in allowing Charleston to remain patient and focused on his career goals, in addition to expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent Tracksmith. Charleston examines the depth of the men's 100 in the United States, with Fred Kerley, Marvin Bracy and Trayvon Bromell sweeping the podium at last year's World Championships. He also revisits contributing to the Americans winning a 4x100 gold medal in 2017 at the Pan American U20 Championships in Peru, and being one of the few athletes from that team still competing in the sport, and how that has provided Charleston the motivation to make his first U.S. senior roster either individually or on the relay to compete Aug. 19-27 at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
