Texas A&M freshman Donavan Brazier decides to pursue professional career

Published Jun 21, 2016

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M freshman Donavan Brazier has made the decision to pursue a professional career in track and field and forgo his remaining three years of collegiate eligibility.

"Donavan is a very, very talented young athlete and this is a decision he has made with his family," said Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry. "As a coach his education and maturity are always a concern when it comes to these kinds of decisions, but Donavan and his family feel they can surround him with good people to further his career. Like any athlete who turns pro early, as a staff we are hesitant, but supportive at the same time."

During the NCAA Championships held this month the 19-year-old Brazier won a national title in the 800m. His time of 1:43.55 broke numerous records, including the 50-year-old standard of 1:44.3 set by Jim Ryun which served as the collegiate best and American junior record. A time of 1:45.93 by Brazier during the indoor season broke the American junior indoor record that was set in 1982.
